Welcome to the homepage for your Sociology-on-the-internet journey. If you have registered for the on-line sociology course through DACC, please register on this course website. You will provide your own user ID and password and I will activate your registration just before class is set to begin....or as soon as possible if you are registering after class has begun. Please take a look at the syllabus to see what the course is about.......and how it works! ..Dan ps. This course, as all my courses, is essentially self-paced. Session Exams have a "window" of time during which they must be completed. The same is true for "general assignments". "General assignments" have firm due dates, but may be completed as early as you wish. (but please turn them in only during the "session's" time window) Happy Learning.....Dan Course Description What has Sociology got to do with me or my life?? I know that's what you're saying out there!!! So........ consider these items; For whom did you vote for in the last election......did race or religion play a role? Are you afraid to walk alone in your neighborhood at night? Do you use the internet often? For what purpose? Do you have a tatoo or piercing? Do you know someone with a tatoo? For what purpose is your tatoo? What do you do for "beautification" of yourself?? What do you think about public schools??? Private schools?? For what purpose does private school exist? Do you drink? Use drugs? Why? Have you lost your job recently? Have you thought about prejudice from time to time? Have you been "marginalized" lately? Pick up a newspaper and look at the headlines. What groups are involved? Why are they acting that way? Ask yourself: Where do I get my viewpoints from? PERSPECTIVE is an important term for sociology. It is what we use to evaluate the culture around us....everything we think, do, believe and have is influenced by perspective. I hope you will gain a little better idea of your perspective about society and why you hold those beliefs. The way we look at the society around us and evaluate each other is often influenced by social factors such as the religion we subscribe to; our job; our race; education, etc. Sociology seeks to increase your knowledge about what is going on around us. If you are not careful; you may increase your "critical thinking" level and find yourself engaged in a little thing we sociologist call the "imagination".
